The standard 19" rack - well the 19" (482.6 mm) panel is about the only thing that is standard (and some people still want to argue about that!). The basic concept of 19" rack mount equipment and panels is they are designed to fit in the following standard dimensions.

19" Rackmount Case

- The Width

Width CAD drawing Packhorse rack case are designed to hold 19 inch rack panels and equipment in a 'rack bay'. A rack bay is 19 inches (482.6 mm) wide. Inside are two parallel metal strips (referred to as 'rack rails') standing vertically. The rack rails are separated by a gap of 17.72 inches (450 mm) for the main body of your equipment to fit between.
Packhorse rack cases can be supplied in a single bay version, double bay (holding two 19" panels side by side), triple bay and so on.
All Packhorse case racks include 4 rack rails as standard, 2 at the front and two at the rear per bay. To enable support rails/shelves to be fitted (to support equipment) an additional pair of rack rails are required.

The rack case height is measured in 'Rack Units' (also known as 'U' and 'HE') with each rack unit being 1.75 inches (44.45mm) in height.

Packhorse rack case heights can be ordered in multiples of rack units, from 2u (3.5"/ 88.9mm) upwards, with our most popular racks being between 12u (21"/533.4mm) and 22unit (38.5"/977.9mm) high.

- The Depth

Packhorse Cases offer a wide range of standard rack case depths (front to rear) at 450mm, 500mm, 550mm, 600mm, 650mm and 700mm. These dimensions exclude front and (where fitted) rear lid(s). Any other depth is available to order. The rack rails are set 18mm in from the front and rear to offer control knobs etc. protection from a side swipe.

Having decided on the number of bays, the height and the depth all that is left to decide on is the style of rack.
